Need a New Roof? Combine Roof Replacement with Solar Installation

If you are thinking about getting a new roof—you may want to consider adding solar at the same time.

And vice versa, if you decide to go solar, and your roof is within 6 years of needing to be replaced, it will be well worth it to do a re-roof prior to the installation. Solar panels are warrantied 25–30 years, which is similar to the lifetime of a roof. By doing both at the same time, you avoid needing to have your solar panels uninstalled then reinstalled after replacing your roof, which will save money in the long-run. Not to mention, increase the energy efficiency of your entire home.

Plus, that is not the only way you will save! When homeowners roll a new roof +solar PV system together, they increase their potential tax credit. Previously this amount was 26% back. BUT in 2023, this tax credit jumped to 30% tax credit back on the roof costs, as well as 30% back on the solar PV system. By going solar in the same calendar year that you get a new roof replacement, you become eligible for 30% back of the combined expense. (Tax Form 5698)

Let’s do the math : IF the cost to replace your roof is $10,000, (depending on the size of the roof and other factors), and the cost of installing your residential rooftop solar array is $20,000, then the combined total bill amounts to $30,000. Now when tax season comes around, you will take this amount and apply the 30% tax credit, which in this scenario equates to $9,000 that you are eligible to receive back.
